With over a thousand sentence starts – three per day, and a writing tip at the end of each week to motivate and inspire, this book provides kick-starts to avoid the dreaded ‘writer’s block’. Useful for any writer at any level, whether they have 10 minutes or 10 hours, to start a new project. Also an ideal tool for writing groups. With a combination of six first-person, six second-person, six third-person and three non-specific point of view starts per week, there are plenty to choose from. Beginning at ‘Day 1’ this book has been designed to be started at any time of the year, and regardless of whether the sentences are used in order or not. With a choice of three per day a writer can select one, two or all and see where it leads them.

This is a slim volume, but my goodness it is jam packed with ideas to kick-start your writing process. Bailey offers an introductory session on using tenses and first, second and third person perspectives and how they might be variably used to ring your writing changes.

She also offers a “tip of the week” which is especially useful. Clearly an advocate of the Stephen King adage that “The road to hell is paved with adverbs ”, her weekly tips are on point and useful for new and aspiring writers, though it’s useful to remember that these are guidelines and not something that requires rigid adherence.

Bailey rightly errs on the side of brevity when it comes to offering starter ideas. What you get are a few words that will hopefully lead into a train of thought, or spark an idea which can take a writer down a previously unconsidered path.

This is exactly the kind of book that is helpful when you find yourself staring into space, not knowing where your pen should go next.

I can see that this is a book that will be useful to have at hand whenever there is writing to be done, irrespective of whether you are an aspiring author or just someone who wants to take up creative writing for themselves.

Verdict: For not a huge investment, this book can make a real difference to how well your ideas flow. I’ll certainly be making sure it is by my side.
