Day nine in my series showcasing my top reads of 2018, following the innovative idea of #bookvent from Jen Lucas of Jen Med’s Book Reviews.

My 9th choice is from a writer whose books are consistently intelligent and have depth of character and really powerful, immersive, writing.

Which book is behind Door No 9?

This is how it begins.
With a near-empty building, the inhabitants forced out of their homes by property developers.
With two women: idealistic, impassioned blogger Ella and seasoned campaigner, Molly.
With a body hidden in a lift shaft.
But how will it end?
This Is How It Ends was one of those books that spoke to me. Complex, layered, skilled, passionate and beautifully crafted, if this does not stand the test of time over decades I will eat my hat.
I love authors who can write passionately about social inequality in the context of their books without proselytising and still make them thrilling, propulsive and passionate.
Eva Dolan is one such, Sarah Hilary another. What I loved about this book was that it contained so much of my own experience, yet was full of timeless themes. Beautifully written, superbly crafted, this book should have rocketed to No1 in the best seller lists.
